But really, what does having large fingers have anything to do with search engine optimization? Well, if we are looking at it anatomically then there is nothing to worry about, but in computer terms “fat fingers” is all about accidentally typing and entering something wrong into a search engine because of which the results you get back get affected.

All of us, at some point of the other, would have spelt our search query incorrectly and entered it without realizing what we have put in. It is only when we get to our results page that we realize that something has gone wrong. In more recent times, you must have noticed that when you do type in something wrong into your search box, you get a message that goes something along the lines of “did you mean” and give you a word or list of words that might be closer to what you are looking. This is, obviously, the search engine’s way of working around the problem of fat fingers because, needless to say, misspelling a keyword will otherwise not lead you to the pages that you actually want to get to.

As businesses start to take keyword optimization more seriously and start to understand what the power of a good SEO campaign, they are realizing that even something as seemingly simple as a misspelled word holds a lot of value. For example, suppose you have a business called ‘Angel” and someone who is looking you up online, types in “Angle” instead of “Angel”, what will he get? If you are not doing much within your campaign to redirect differently spelt words to your website then the person who is looking for you will have very low chances of finding you.

Of course, we should not assume that all these incorrectly spelt words are put into search engine search boxes by mistake, because another problem that is very true about today’s searchers is that many of them might not be good spellers to start with. Too many people now rely on spell checks for correct spelling and this means that the possibility of searchers not spelling your keywords correctly goes up. Because of this problem, it becomes all the more important that you take fat fingers into consideration when you are working on your keywords and SEO campaign.

In addition to that, you should also keep in mind that being present online means that people from all around the world can be searching for you. Especially if you are targeting clients in different parts of the world then you need to take into consideration the change in spelling between American and British English. Common words like centre/center and colour/color can be spelt different depending on which part of the world you come from. In fact, even the word “optimization” is spelt “optimisation” in British English. So this issue of fat fingers isn’t only about mistyping or misspelling; the correct spelling for one region might not be correct for another. But when you are choosing keywords you might choose just one way of spelling the word, which means that all those who spell your keyword differently will most probably not be able to find you online; unless, of course, you tackle the issue of fat fingers in your SEO campaign.

The fact is that misspelling of words is not a once in a while kind of thing. Regardless of what the cause of not typing in the correct spelling might be, what you need to be most concerned about is how to overcome these variations in spelling. And for that, there are plenty of softwares and tools that will help you figure out, not only the effectiveness and popularity of your keywords, but also direct you toward related spellings and words of your keywords.

The other factor to keep in mind is that not everyone who is using a search engine to look you up will be a savvy searcher and this can be all the more reason for them to not type in the correct keyword or phrase into the search box. That is one of the many reason you need to understand your target market and their common behavioral patters when searching online. You need to take into consideration those who are search experts and know exactly what they need to do to get what they are looking for, those who have a fair idea of how to find what they are looking up and those who know next to nothing about online search. And those who are spelling your keyword incorrectly could be from any of these categories of searchers.

The most important thing is that your target market is able to find you online regardless of the issues of fat fingers. And that can be done with a little bit of planning and by making your search engine optimization campaign tighter.
