Below are some basic things you should consider in order to be ranked well in Google search results:

Purchase and populate a keyword friendly domain rather then company name.

  • Instead of choosing your domain to be your specific company name (www.billjohnson.com), choose a URL that describes your company's services (www.truckrentalnj.com.) You can list your company name in your title, metatags, and page content.
  • Another tip would be to include the location of the area you service in the domain name. That way you are not competing for rankings with companies around the country when you only service one state, a few counties or towns (depends on the size of each company)

Name website sub pages relating to its content.

Use heading Tags <H1>

  • Heading tags tell Search Engine spiders what the article/content is about. Heading tags range from 18 size font - 14 size font and bring attention to the top section of each page. A clear and descriptive heading assists spiders in relating content to search queries.

Populate your site with keyword-rich content.

  • If your page is titled "apples" then the content should be about apples. If your page is titled "oranges" then your content should mostly contain information about oranges.
  • The more each page's URL, title tags, headings, and web content coordinate, the more relative the overall URL is "viewed" in Google's database for the keyword. If your website URL is viewed as highly relevant to a search term, then your website will appear higher in search results.

Title, Meta, and descriptions should match content throughout the website.

  • The title tag is the title of each page. Descriptive keywords should be added in the <title> section of each page. The title appears above your internet browsers toolbar.
  • Metatags are keywords directly related to each page throughout the website. These keywords do not have to be in sentence form, rather a list of words separated by commas. The Meta keywords should directly relate to the content on each page. Be descriptive and include words that may be put in front of very competitive phrases. For instance, include your company's location and surrounding towns that are serviced.

Create a sitemap.

  • Follow this link to create your free Google Sitemap. It is very easy to do and has great results for SEO.

Include a robots.txt file.

  • A robots.txt file is a small text file that is stored in your website's home directory. Search Engine spiders look for this .txt file to see what information should NOT be reviewed.
  • The easiest free robots.txt file creator that I was able to locate is http://www.yellowpipe.com/yis/tools/robots.txt

Register with Google Maps.

  • Registration is fast and easy. By registering with Google Maps, your website, company location, contact information and related business keywords is registered into the Google database. By doing so, you are letting Google know that your company and website exists.

Submit your URL to free submission websites on a regular basis.

Register your site with major websites that refer traffic.

  • DMOZ
  • DIGG
  • Linked In
  • Twitter
  • Delicious
  • Other article/information posting sites
