So you want to hire an SEO company? That's fine--great in fact, since a lot of it is hard work and involves many skills, many of which is rarely doable alone. But before hiring an SEO company to optimize your page, you need to be aware that despite the great many honest SEO companies, a few are out there to scam you out of your hard-earned money. Here are some tips that can help prevent you from being scammed:

First, know a little about SEO yourself. There are quite a lot of free SEO resources out there, so don't skimp on this. This will help you distinguish between honest SEO companies and ones that are scams/use illegal methods (black hat SEO).

Once you've done this, go around and look for several legitimate SEO companies. Ask for prices, possibly discounts and promos if they have any. Check their own site if it has been properly optimized--a good SEO company MUST have a well-optimized site. Then, have a look at their performance. You can do this by checking the sites of clients they've worked on. If possible, ask for the contacts of the clients to get first-hand information about the company's performance from them.

Finally, if the company promises a no. 1 ranking in every major search engine, perhaps you should go look somewhere else. SEO does NOT guarantee a no. 1 ranking; this is extremely difficult especially for highly competitive keywords. There is a chance that this company might scam you by using other methods to make it appear like your website is at the top of a search page, so stay away from them.
